“Democracy doesn’t recognize east or west; democracy is simply people’s will. Therefore, I do not acknowledge that there are various models of democracy; there is just democracy itself.”

Shirin Ebadi, Iranian political and human rights activist, lawyer, former judge, and founder of the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran.

OF THE PEOPLE

The voices Of the People tell a story about the ways democratic rights, principles and values are practiced in their daily lives through how neighborhoods, housing, education, food, health, wellness, economic stability, labor, and social and community networks are experienced.

We invite you to reimagine the social contract of democracy through a lens of collective stewardship. We can begin to rebuild the bonds of society and deliver on the full promise of democracy.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT

THE TRUTHS WE HOLD

Join us as we launch the Democracy is… pop-up at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. to explore what democracy means to each of us and how we’re inspired across our neighborhoods and country. By learning how each of us is connected, we can build a more perfect, just, and equitable union rooted in the environments and systems we plan, design, and build around us.

Your Voices, Amplified

Our "Living Room" talks help us understand what democracy means to each of us and is one of the ways we're cultivating Democracy in neighborhoods across the United States

We are launching a crowdfunding campaign to bring the pop-up to various cities and develop a full immersive Democracy is… experience in Summer of 2024! As part of this movement, you can donate to help cultivate democracy by empowering:

  • Access to the Democracy is… pop-up experience across the country
  • The activation of the full immersive Democracy is… experience
  • Building a living archive, a “co-created public library” packed with community information, story telling, mapping, educational tools
  • Building team capacity through our Democracy is… fellowship
  • Hosting “Living Room” talks in different neighborhoods across the country
  • Advancing opportunities through community land acquisition, communal wealth building, cultural hubs, and restorative justice and equitable development projects
  • Produce an archival docuseries capturing oral histories and the impact of each project we activate in addressing systemic inequity

Bring Us to Your Block

By hosting Democracy is… you cultivate an immersive and interactive experience for diverse audiences to identify and support the many ways we can move beyond rhetorical nods, symbolic gestures, and empty promises of democracy… to a spatial practice of its very values, liberties and rights.

A VIEW FROM THE BLOCK

In partnership with Carnevale, The Practice of Democracy (PoD) is prototyping an immersive online experience. Democracy isA View From the Block aims to connect people to each other from all over through interactive online neighborhood walks.

PoD strongly believes the more we expose and educate one another to build shared-value understanding, the more we can collectively advance democratic rights and values. These stories are located within a neighborhood can be represented both digitally and physically.

The beta experience is launching soon, with our test city and neighborhood in Trenton, New Jersey.
